Thanks Zurga

I've done all that successfully.

Now to see if it helps with my problems. I certainly hope so. Ancestris is really nice.

Thanks again

Mick

Hello

I really like Ancestris but am on the verge of giving up on it. There seems to be so many bugs, at least on my Mac, that it's becoming simply too painful to use.

My M1 Macbook has Java pre-installed. The About Ancestris shows this:

Ancestris version:  12.0.12176
Java:  12.0.2+10 - /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-12.0.2.jdk/Contents/Home
System:  Mac OS X - 10.16 - mickreed
User directory  /Users/mickreed/Library/Application Support/ancestris/trunk

All seems to be correct other than the MacOS version which is Sonoma 14.0

I wondered if the Java version was the problem so installed version 8 from Oracle since this claims to support all Ancestris features.

However, I cannot get Ancestris to use this version. I don't want to change the default from Apple's version and, anyway, I don't think I can.

So I tried to force Ancestris to use version 8 by changing the config file. I read the documentation fully and also a forum exchange from August. None of it works because the files referred to do not exist in the stated folders. There are only two ancestris.conf files on my entire system. One for version 11, and the current one in the user directory referred to on the About Ancestris screen. This reads as follows:

###properties written ancestris
default_options="-J-XX:+IgnoreUnrecognizedVMOptions -J--add-opens=java.base/java.lang=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk=ALL-UNNAMED -J-Xmx8g -J--add-exports=java.desktop/sun.awt.im=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-exports=java.management/sun.management=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.base/java.net=ALL-UNNAMED -J-Dapple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true Support/ancestris/trunk/modules/ext/ilf-gpl.jar -J--add-opens=java.prefs/java.util.prefs=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-exports=java.desktop/java.awt.peer=ALL-UNNAMED -J-Dsun.zip.disableMemoryMapping=true -J--add-exports=java.desktop/com.sun.beans.editors=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-exports=java.desktop/sun.swing=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/javax.swing=ALL-UNNAMED --locale en -J-Xms96m -J--add-opens=java.desktop/javax.swing.text=ALL-UNNAMED -J-Dapple.awt.graphics.UseQuartz=true --laf net.infonode.gui.laf.InfoNodeLookAndFeel -J--add-opens=java.base/java.lang.ref=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/sun.awt.X11=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-exports=java.base/sun.reflect.annotation=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/javax.swing.plaf.basic=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/sun.awt.shell=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/com.sun.java.swing.plaf.motif=ALL-UNNAMED -J-XX:+UseStringDeduplication -J--add-opens=java.base/java.util=ALL-UNNAMED --cp:p /Users/mickreed/Library/Application Support/ancestris/trunk/modules/ext/ilf-gpl.jar -J--add-opens=java.desktop/java.awt.event=ALL-UNNAMED --branding ancestris -J--add-opens=java.desktop/java.awt=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-opens=java.desktop/javax.swing.plaf.synth=ALL-UNNAMED -J--add-exports=java.desktop/sun.awt=ALL-UNNAMED"
default_userdir="${HOME}/.${APPNAME}/trunk"
default_mac_userdir="${HOME}/Library/Application Support/${APPNAME}/trunk"

Presumably, I need to add a line to this file, but what? And where?

Help appreciated.

Zurga

I think I've sorted this issue, at least for the moment.

The loss of focus seems to be confined to the Standard look and feel, as already mentioned. It seems okay with Nimbus and Metal.

However, pasting into certain fields does not work with Nimbus and Metal although it's okay with Standard. For example, I cannot paste a file path into the relevant field in these lokk and feels but I can with Standard - see attachment.

However, I downloaded the InfoNode look and feel and that seems to solve all the problems. At least so far.

I'm glad because I want to use Ancestris but these bugs could have been a deal breaker.

Best

Okay.

It seems as though this problem is limited to the Standard appearance. All seems well using either Nimbus or Metal. At least the problem hasn't emerged so far.

However, new issues regarding pasting into certain field exist in these appearances. I shall have to explore more deeply tomorrow and try to be a bit more precise.

Cheers

Thanks Zurga

It happens in the GEDCOM editor if I paste something in, or delete something.

Also in the Aries editor if I save something, or otherwise exit that property.

I haven't used the Cygnus editor, but just tested it and it happened there when I saved something.

I've been using the Standard appearance. I'll try with Nimbus and Metallic to see if that makes a difference.

Cheers

Hello

When I'm working on an individual, say adding an item of information like, for example, a census, all is fine until I save that work.

Then the window immediately changes focus to a person I was working on earlier. So, today, I'm adding some stuff for one George Crick. I add the census info, save it, and find myself looking at the window for Emma Bendell, who I worked on yesterday. To add more info for George, such as his occupation, I have to find him again, add the info, save it and, voilĂ , I'm back with Emma Bendell again.

This can't be right, could you please advise.

Apart from this quirk, I'm starting to like Ancestris very much.

I'm using Ancestris 12 on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.5.2

Cheers

Hello

I just tried to install the Registers Records plugin and got a message that it is modified or damaged and installation can not continue.

I'm on Ancestris 12 (MacOS Ventura) on a 2020 M1 Macbook Pro.

Thanks, Zurga.

I can get round this, probably, by entering the date on a form acceptable to Ancestris and just record the original yext in a note.

Hello

I'm trialling Ancestris to see if it could replace my main genealogy software on my Mac. I have a date problem.

The UK used the Julian calendar until 1752 and the new year began on 25 March. To bring the UK calendar in line with Europe they removed several days from the calendar. One day was Wednesday 2 Sep 1752 and the next was Thursday 14 Sep 1752.

The problem is two-fold:

1. A Julian date recorded as, for example, 3 May 1725, would be 14 May 1725 in the Gregorian calendar. I want to record it as written yet indicate it as a Julian date?

2. Much more important. Dates between 1 Jan and 25 March were often recorded as, for example, 2 Feb 1723/24. Most software that I've used allow this way of writing the date but Ancestris declares it an invalid date. How should I record such dates?

Hope that makes sense.

Best

Mick Reed
