Incorrect display for the 'Event' in the event list under the Events tab

Hi,

In the list of events, the event type is displayed next to the 'Event' label instead of the event description; see example in the attachment. (I used Ancestris 14.)

Hi,

That is not a bug. That is intended. The list of events has to have short labels and classification ones, not descriptions.

The event types tend to be short words or sentences. Hence the drop down list box.

The event description can be several sentences long. It is a text field. Not good for a label.

Thanks for the explanation! However, I still think something isn't quite right—or rather, there is an inconsistency in the program. In the case of occupations, only the name of the occupation (i.e. the event description) is displayed alongside the 'Event' label, rather than the classification from 'Event type', which I think how it should be.

I also think that alongside the 'Event' label only specific event descriptions (whether short or long) should be displayed; in my view, 'event types' do not fit this description, as their coverage is broader.

I also noticed that in the Cygnus editor, the content of 'Event type' is incorrectly displayed instead of the introductory 'Event' label.

I would need specifc examples.

For me, EVEN are displayed similarly in Cygnus and Aries for instance. The TYPE is used in both Aries and Cygnus lists.

Now there are displaying differences between the editors because they are just different and have evolved differently. As long as the same field name as the same field content, we should be good. If you find counter examples, let me know.

Hi,

Cygnus and Ariès value are the same for EVEN. Only Aries displays Event before the value. There is not enough space in Cygnus to do that.

Only EVEN has this behaviour because EVEN can be anything. All the other event tags (GRAD, OCCU etc) are already TYPEd to an event category hence no more TYPE of TYPE is necessary.

I can understand that, but it wasn't my main issue. What I find particularly problematic is that, for a general event, the value from 'Event type' is displayed following the 'Event' label in the list of events, whereas for other kinds of events, this is not the case. The 'Occupation' event is such an example where the value from 'Event' is correctly displayed following the label instead of the value from 'Event type'.

I acknowledge that this is merely a matter of display and does not affect the final result in the GEDCOM format, as long as one is doing things correctly. Nevertheless, I consider the above issue a rather annoying inconsistency, especially given the considerable effort required to figure out which data should be entered into which fields for events in general. The reason one may be starting to doubt again whether one is really doing everything right.
