Hi,
Yes, sorry, we are having a technical issue with the forum and are trying to fix it.
Regarding your message, The first field is the event description (values are remembered across event of the same nature), and event Type (different values to categorize event of the same nature).
This is aligned to the gedcom standard.
All events have a TYPE (sub-field of the event).
Not all events have a description (BIRT, MARR, DEAT, GRAD, etc.) but some have (OCCU, RESI in Gedcom 7.0, etc).
All 3 editors now always show both fields consistently:
- Gedcom Editor shows on 2 lines, Description first, then as aa sub-property TYPE.
- Cygnus shows 2 fields left is the description and right is the TYPE
- Aries shows the 2 fields: top is the TYPE (to avoid too muych change with the past) and second down is the Description.
The data is unchanged compared to before the change. What Aries was doing before was displaying the Type data in the description field for events which did not have a description (BIRT, etc).
The Event field describes the event (more generically or more precisely, up to you to decide) than the Event Type field. Up to you to use it or not.
Personnaly, I use the description field of the tag EVEN to specify the events which are not part of the Gedcom standard list, in 1 word only.
I use the type to "classify" the events of the same nature.
I hope this is clearer now and sorry for the historical confusion.
Best regards,
Frederic
