Change to Events?
« on: March 25, 2026, 10:44:12 »
I have been using Event items to record education records as you suggested in this post:
https://forum.ancestris.org/index.php?topic=5254.0

Using the Aries editor when adding a new event for a person previously the dropdown showed a list of events I had used (e.g. "High School", "University" etc) that I could select from. Now the dropdown list is empty.
Looking at the GEDCOM previous EVEN items had
1 EVEN
2 TYPE High School

If I create a new event in the aries editor now and manually put "High School" in the Event field the resulting GEDCOM has
1 EVEN High School
with no TYPE entry

Looking at cygnus editor (which I don't use) it has data entry field for both event and type.
For the old events it shows the event field empty and the type field has the value with the dropdown populated. For a new event (created via Aries) it has "High School" in the event field and type field is empty with no dropdown.

What has changed? Why are the editors different? How should I be using Events for consistancy? Do I need to go back and change all the events I had created following the previous advice?

Do you use v14 or v13 ?

We have changed how the properties are managed in v14.
This could be a side effect.

We will check that.

Hi Chris,

I made some changes 2 days ago so that editors would be aligned (they were not). Obvisouly there is some left over to fix. Can you please attach a screen capture to be sure to fix where it shoul dbe because what I tested was working.

Just to make sure as well, the top line is now always "Event description", the drop-down list near the bottom is now "Event Type".

Before the change, depending on the event, the type was sometimes in the top field, sometimes in the bottom field. I understand the change forces upon you a change of habit for EVEN but it is now consistent with where the data is stored.

Thanks.
Regards.

Hi Frederic

Sorry only just seen your message; there seemed to be issue with forum earlier I kept getting "503 Service overloaded" messages.
Unfortunately I have already applied the latest update so can't create a screenshot of what I was seeing when I raised the initial post. Looking now every in the Aries editor every property seems to have an "Event Type" field as the first field; most of which have empty dropdowns, a few of which have values populated in th dropdown but I am not sure where they are getting their values from. [Edit: looking at my GEDCOM they appear to be TYPE entries for the event/property but I don't recall entering them (or being able to enter them as such). Guess I need to clean my GEDCOM.]
The EVEN property now has 2 fields "Event", which has an empty dropdown, and "Event Type", which has the list of education stages (High School, University etc) I previously had.
Should I be adding a value in the "Event" field say "Education Stage" which would link to the list of types? Would that allow me to add an event (say Military Record) with its own list of Event Type (e.g. Draft, Active Service, Medal Received etc) which would be seperate from the education records? Not doing military records yet, just thinking ahead.

Hi,

Yes, sorry, we are having a technical issue with the forum and are trying to fix it.

Regarding your message, The first field is the event description (values are remembered across event of the same nature), and event Type (different values to categorize event of the same nature).

This is aligned to the gedcom standard.

All events have a TYPE (sub-field of the event).

Not all events have a description (BIRT, MARR, DEAT, GRAD, etc.) but some have (OCCU, RESI in Gedcom 7.0, etc).

All 3 editors now always show both fields consistently:
- Gedcom Editor shows on 2 lines, Description first, then as aa sub-property TYPE.
- Cygnus shows 2 fields left is the description and right is the TYPE
- Aries shows the 2 fields: top is the TYPE (to avoid too muych change with the past) and second down is the Description.

The data is unchanged compared to before the change. What Aries was doing before was displaying the Type data in the description field for events which did not have a description (BIRT, etc).
The Event field describes the event (more generically or more precisely, up to you to decide) than the Event Type field. Up to you to use it or not.
Personnaly, I use the description field of the tag EVEN to specify the events which are not part of the Gedcom standard list, in 1 word only.
I use the type to "classify" the events of the same nature.

I hope this is clearer now and sorry for the historical confusion.

Best regards,
Frederic

Frederic
Thanks for explanation and quick update of Aries editor, much appreciated.
I think I have a little tidying to do (but not too much) just to make everything consistent and hopefully compatible with GEDCOM standard for the future.
