How to enter partners and children from unmarried partners
« on: December 09, 2024, 08:39:03 »
Hello,

I am a new user of Ancestris and I really like it so far.

One thing I'm really puzzled about at the moment is how to save partnerships and/or children born out of wedlock in the family tree. Whenever I try to add such a child to a relative, a new family is created where there is always a married couple

I hope this topic hasn't been asked here in the forum before, but I haven't found anything about it in my search so far.

Regards,
Martin

A family entity represents the link between partners and children.
There is no obligation to define a wedding event.
If there is no wedding event, the couple is not considered as married.

Hi,

Thank you for the quick reply. It is easier than I thought.

I was just surprised that the symbol with the wedding rings is displayed in the graphical tree even if the couple is not married and that Ancestris does not explicitly distinguish between the cases “Married with known information (date, place, etc.)”, “Married with no further data” and “Unmarried partners”.

OK, I haven't understood that the trouble was the visual aspect of the graphical tree.

Not a bad idea to remove the symbol where there is no information.
We had already changed the symbol when there is a divorce.
I will check this.

It's done in v13.
You don't have ring anymore if there is no information about a wedding
You have now 3 different signs :
- Married
- Divorced
- No information

Wow - I'm really impressed by the level of support and the speed at which you've implemented this feature!

I've been using Ancestris non-stop over the last few days to clean and update my family tree with around 1400 people that I've downloaded from Ancestry, and I really like the fact that you can manage the data directly in Gedcom. Unfortunately, there were a few areas where I found the software a bit tricky to use or not very intuitive. It took me a while to get used to the software and enter my family data. Some things were unclear to me, whether that was a bug or a feature.

I'll keep an eye on how the software develops and will continue to use it, especially for cleaning up or checking Gedcom files.

Thanks for implementing this feature quickly and for making the software free to use.

Don't hesitate to ask if anything is not clear.

You also have the documentation here : https://docs.ancestris.org/books/user-guide
