PortableApp version
« on: March 12, 2022, 22:12:53 »
Would it be possible to create a PortableApps version of Ancestris?  I often research at the library and it would be very helpful to have a version of Ancestris on a thumb drive that I could plug into the library computer and have access to my Ancestris database.

Ancestris database is only a GEDCOM file.
You can open it with existing mobile applications.

Our team is actually too small to be able to develop a mobile application and maintain it in addition of the desktop application.

Actually I was not looking for a mobile app.  I was hoping to be able to run the desktop app from a flash drive like the apps here: [url]https://portableapps.com/[url]

Hi,

Well, you can always put both ancestris and your genealogy files on the flashdrive and run it from any computer, as long as Java is installed on that computer with a proper version.

Is that what you are looking for?

Cheers,
Frederic

You can do it.

Put on your flashdrive Ancestris (typically, unzip the installation package)
Put on your flashdrive a Java Jre or Jdk (again unzip a Java installation).

Modify the ancestris.conf file in "ancestris/etc" folder.
Specify where is your Java installation.
Specify a user folder relative to your flashdrive and you should be able to launch the application from the flashdrive.

The tricky part is the user directory due to the drive letter or mounting point.
You will to have to change the directory if the mounting point is different from one computer to another.
