Wont run on Mac
« on: December 19, 2020, 01:48:19 »
Ancestris will not run on MacOS 11 Big Sur.  The error message says:

"ancestris.app" cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.
macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.

Is there a workaround?

Thank to try Ancestris.

Yes there is a work around, please read our documentation : https://docs.ancestris.org/books/user-guide/page/step-by-step-installation-on-macos#bkmrk-ancestris-from-unide

We are a small team of volunteers and we can't afford the price asked by Apple to "verify" our code.

I am having the same problem as this user with MacOS BigSur.  I have followed the instructions on the website for versions 10 and 11.  Program will not run.

Did you have installed Java ?
Did you have explicitly chosen the Java path in the configuration file ?
Could you describe the error message you have ?
Could you launch the program from a terminal and give us the error you have ?

I also cannot get the Ancestris app to start on my Big Sur Mac.  I have Java installed:

openjdk 11.0.10 2021-01-19
OpenJDK Runtime Environment AdoptOpenJDK (build 11.0.10+9)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM AdoptOpenJDK (build 11.0.10+9, mixed mode)

I have the environment variable $JAVA_HOME set:
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/adoptopenjdk-11.jdk/Contents/Home

When I click on the ancestris icon, System Preferences does not offer the 'Open Anyway' button and the ancestris application doesn't start.

Any thoughts?
Thank you

Thank you to try Ancestris.
Apple is not very friendly with small software like us.

Please, read the documentation here : https://docs.ancestris.org/books/user-guide/page/step-by-step-installation-on-macos#bkmrk-confirmation-of-the-

You should find all the way to allow the software to run.

I have tried to follow the instruction for installing on macOS Big Sur.  Problem is that step 26 does not show "Open Anyway" in System Preferences Security & Privacy.
Following further in the instructions, there is no folder named 'ancestris' in ${HOME}/Library/Application Support/.  Therefore, I cannot change the ${HOME}/Library/Application Support/ancestris/trunk/etc/ancestris.conf file.

Please advise...

Try to find where you put the Ancestris directory.
In this directory, you should find a "etc" directory.
In this "etc" directory you have the ancestris.conf file.

If you had succeed to launch Ancestris, you could have a ".ancestris" in the ${HOME}/Library/Application Support directory.
Note that the directory name begin with a point.
You could need to display hided directory to see it.

Thank you for your continuing replies, Zurga.  However, I have not succeeded in launching the application and there is no ancestris or .ancestris folder in the Genealogy folder in which I placed the downloaded file nor in the Applications Support folder.  Not anywhere on the drive.  Attempting to launch the application is halted before any files or folders are written to the drive.

As noted earlier, I have a properly installed Java installation:
openjdk 11.0.10 2021-01-19
OpenJDK Runtime Environment AdoptOpenJDK (build 11.0.10+9)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM AdoptOpenJDK (build 11.0.10+9, mixed mode)

On the downloaded directory, you have to find an "etc" directory.
Or the same in the place where Apple has installed the software.

Apple is really not user-friendly with open-source software.
You have installed OpenJdk version of Java.
This version is known to be very badly detected by the software using Java.
This version miss a variable definition that Oracle does.

Apple believe that is very cool to hide all the folder structure of an application, so you struggle to find the correct folder and the correct configuration file.
I'm deeply sorry for the inconvenience you experiment and I thank you for your perseverance.
