It would be nice to have a world map available offline.
« on: November 18, 2020, 10:45:50 »
It happens again and again that I am outside the range of WiFi or have no access.
Then it would be nice to have a world map available offline.

Thank you, Fancois!

Ancestris could 'bring' a world map, similar to the beginnings in Ages!
In addition, available software could be used, such as Vasco da Gama under Windows (https://motionstudios.de/).

EDIT:
For Haiku (OS) maybe Marble (https://marble.kde.org/), also available for Linux, Mac, Windows)?

I'm not sure that a world map offline will be efficient or give useful display.
If you want great details, this will add substantial data in the software.

For Vasco de Gama, I have no idea of the type of data format they use.
You can already export coordinates with the place table.

What do I enter here ("Please add me to the card") if I use Ancestris with another OS, or with several operating systems (Haiku, eComStation, Windows ) on different computers?

Choose your most used OS.
And, no, we won't define all flavors of Linux.

I do not understand your wording.
We spoke about adding a possibility for Ancestris to use an offline map. Maybe world maps could be difficult, but what about partial maps?
Openstreetmap gives you the possibility to extract tiles. Two fantastic tools are mkgmap and splitter. A graphical tool exists too, it's josm. Once the data downloaded, you can create a garmin readable map using mkgmap. If Ancestris can read Garmin maps, I could help by creating maps of France, Germany, US states, etc. Maybe there would be a possibility to create a dev in Ancestris that could read such garmin maps.

Always about those offline maps, there is a map, "french people" would absolutely enjoy to use offline : cassini maps.

Just my two cents, but I can easily understand that it would be difficult to implement such a tool to Ancestris. Francois

I didn't have understood the question as you just described it.
You describe the possibility to add an external source for tiles files (possibly a local one)
I believed Pollux described the possibility to display a default map when you don't have a internet connection, just like Ages! do.

I put your suggestion on the to do list.
I put also the possibility to display a static world map in the to do list.

Thank you. If I remember well, Frederic spoke about the Cassini map at the very beginning of his writing of the geo view module. Francois

The implemented static map should be completely independent of the Internet (except for its installation)!
There is already an excellent internet-based solution in Ancestris!

Most of my ancestors come from East Frisia, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg. Some from different places in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
At least for Germany, especially for East Frisia (but also for Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg), I created 'maps' using older route programs that also showed the smallest places (consisting of 3 houses).
So I didn't have to download a detailed map from the Internet because the generation application was installed locally.
It was (until now) about showing the 'distant' relatives (or contacts or seekers) from which places their ancestors came or lived (including frequent moves).

A few years ago, we spoke with Frederic and Daniel about a module that could display on a map the moves of a family. For example, you take a family born in the 16th century, and you ask for the moves of the family and theirs descendants (you can specify the number of generations) on a map, based on the places of birth, death, marriage, and places of living. It would be interesting and very instructive. Francois

This idea is already in the to do list.
Others software have already this type of tools (Geneatique 2020 for example).
