How to edit and remove sources
« on: October 06, 2019, 16:53:08 »
I am a new user trying to get my footing in using this great tool. I have enjoyed it so far, but I have a nagging problem that I can't seem to find a direct answer to.
I have several source files that I would like to correct and/or delete. A few, I am not sure how they duplicated, however, being new to the program, I am sure it is user error.
I don't write code and I would like to be able to edit all sources for the entire tree in one interactive window, preferably.
Is there, or will there be, a window to perform edits and deletions for source entries that comes in a format for newbies like me?

Hi,

Not sure what you mean by edit sources : if you mean having a list of all SOUR tags and their related information, the way I can see that is to select "Sources" in the entity list view and use the gedcom editor to edit them one after the other.

Once you see a source in the Gedcom editor, a "right-click/delete" should let you delete it.

Best regards,
Frederic

Thank you so much! That answers my question, except for one thing.
When I click the plus sign to add a source, the list of choices comes up with a source title for one of the files that I want to change. For example: it says "Personal Testimony of Joe S. Shmo" but I want to change it to say "Personal testimony of Joe S. Snow" Is this possible? Will the typo affect anything I, or someone else accessing this tree in the future, will encounter as I further the tree information?

Not sure what you mean. Modifying a source title can be done at any time.

Maybe a screen capture would help me see what you mean.

You remove the John Stark source all together by right-clicking on it *in the gedcom editor" when the source shows.

To find it, you can use the search field on the top right corner of Ancestris. Type "stark" for instance. A list of all entities containing "stark" in your genealogy should appear in a menu list underneath. Pick the source one you want.

This source entity should now appear in the gedcom editor.

Right click on the root level and select delete.

You can remove the "stark" individual in the same manner.
