Import forces 4 levels of place name heirarchy
« on: October 03, 2019, 15:47:49 »
...not a problem in itself except that place names can end up displayed as things like ", Manchester, Lancashire, England" or worse yet ", , ,India" if I know someone was born in that country but have no more detail.

It looks ugly. Isn't it possible to remove leading commas for display purposes?

Where do you want to remove the commas ?

When I see :
 Luxembourg
What I am supposed to do with it ?
If I see :
Luxembourg, , , => This is the city
, , , Luxembourg => This is the country
, , Luxembourg, => This is the county/ administrative area of Belgium

So the commas are important in the display of editors.

Beside this, the commas are removed from the graphical tree.
And you can adjust the format to display only on or two jurisdictions.

So the commas are important in the display of editors.

When entering the information yes but surely not when displaying it (in any field)? You wouldn't write " , , , London" if you didn't know someone's address, you'd write "London". If you knew they lived in Islington you'd write "Islington, London", there wouldn't be any leading commas. If the city and province had the same name, for example, you'd write "Quebec, Quebec", the meaning would be obvious.

TLDR: I think it would look better if leading commas were omitted from all displayed fields as they are in the tree view.

Just my opinion :D

Here we have a trouble with the way you can edit the data : In the editors, you just focus in the field and you can change the data.
It could be more unexpected for the user to see commas when the focus is on and no commas when the focus is off.
