ENGLISH / Re: ReĀ : Updating Ancestris
« on: January 09, 2020, 09:04:37 »
You really need to get Ancestris into the Linux repository. If you don't anyone but experts will just give up. Most people will move on to another program rather than ask on here what to do ... When it is in the repository you just click and it is installed. It used to be there and I don't know why it is gone ...
It doesn't work like that for 'official' packages, these are decided upon by the particular distribution and I don't think you could reasonably expect the Ancestris team to provide and maintain a range of packages for the many Linux distributions. Remember they're doing it for free! As every Linux distro's website will tell you, if you want a particular package in their repo, you'll have to learn how to do that yourself or if you just want the program for yourself probably have to learn how to build it from source. At least you don't have to build Ancestris or add a PPA, you just have to download it and read the instructions.

With regard to starting the program, the instructions for the 'Daily Version' can be found by following the 'how to install' link from the home page. Here's the page: https://en.ancestris.org/index.php?title=Installation

Hope that clears things up a bit and that you can get on with using the program :D

Did you update Java recently ?
I did mention an update to OpenJDK but I've just checked and the last one was back in October so I don't think it's that. I'll keep digging!

I'm not sure if it's related to this change but fonts are not displaying properly, they have the fuzzy purple pixellated effect again as mentioned in this thread: https://forum.ancestris.org/index.php?topic=2461.msg5128#msg5128

If I change to 'Standard' look and feel the fonts look ok but are not smoothed. If I change to Nimbus the fonts in Aries editor appear in different sizes (for example in the items listed in the 'Events' tab) and thr dividing lines in the table views are not visible.

As per that earlier post, I've edited /etc/environment and tried all the anti-aliasing options from this page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Java_Runtime_Environment_fonts but none of them fix the problem this time.

I've allocated 4gb for Ancestris out of 12gb in total and no graph windows open - it's a reasonably powerful desktop PC not a low spec laptop and all other apps behave as expected.  I've checked all the window manager settings, turned off compositing etc but the problem persists.

OK I've found the problem, it's the JTattoo themes. Selecting any of them causes the same issue, switching to 'standard' resolves the problem.

I've been using the 'textured' theme since installing Ancestris without any problems, maybe a recent update to OpenJDK is causing some sort of conflict? It's really bad, dialogs jump around all over the place when being dragged. I'll stick to 'standard' for now but hopefully this will give you some clue as to where the problem lies.

Regards,

Paul

It's openjdk 11.0.5 2019-10-15 on Linux Mint 19.2 64 bit.

I've tried recording a gif but it doesn't show up well. The dialogs 'wobble', it's almost like they are trying to snap to certain positions when moved. I'll have a root around, perhaps it's something to do with the window manager itself...

Cheers

ENGLISH / Dialog Display Issue
« on: December 18, 2019, 13:04:24 »
When dragging any dialog around within ancestris (eg Preferences, Configure Display, Notes etc), it judders very badly. I haven't noticed this before so I wonder if it's a recent update or maybe an update to OpenJDK that's causing it (although It's not a system wide issue, it's confined to Ancestris)?

Cheers

ENGLISH / Re: Local map material with Ancestris usable?
« on: December 06, 2019, 19:40:57 »
If you have any scripting ability...

As KML is really just XML, you could write a simple script to work directly on the gedcom file outside of Ancestris.

For every INDI that has MAP data write out the INDI number (or name or whatever) and the latitude/longitude to a file with appropriate KML tags...
<name>I123 John Doe</name>
<Point>
<coordinates>-122.0822035425683,37.42228990140251,0</coordinates>
</Point>

Once that file is saved, paste it into a KML template then open in google Earth or whatever.

See https://developers.google.com/kml/documentation/kml_tut#placemarks

Not sure if that's what you're after but it might help  :)

ENGLISH / Re: Opening a FTM 2005 .FTW Tree File
« on: November 26, 2019, 07:54:54 »
I have a .FTW file of my family tree from 2005.  I do not have FTM and I am desperately trying to open and view this file.  Can it be done in Ancestris and if so, how??
Looking at this http://dotwhat.net/file/extension/ftw/3482 it seems as though it's not a gedcom file... have you tried opening it in a text editor to see if it's at least a plain text format? According to that link there are (or at least were) programs that could do this for you (for a price!).http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php)

If it's a binary or proprietary format I would suggest finding someone with FTM who could open it for you and then export a gedcom. I'm sure you'll find someone easily if you ask on Rootschat (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php, ask in the 'technical help' section) - there are usually about a thousand people online at any one time and the community is very helpful.

Good luck!

Paul

ENGLISH / New memory allocation feature
« on: November 14, 2019, 19:13:03 »
Thanks for the update with memory allocation - https://forum.ancestris.org/index.php?topic=2514.msg5337#msg5337 - very useful, but why does it appear as nn'Go' when the 'standard' abbreviation for gigabytes is GB? Not a big deal, I'm just interested!

How about putting the version and OS info into a text box (I'm guessing they are captions/labels at the minute?) so it can be copied/pasted when raising issues here on the forum? Not sure but it may be possible to copy from a read-only text box.

EDIT: forgot to say, it can't be copied from the dialog when clicking the 'versions' button either.

ENGLISH / Re: Usability suggestions: Aries Editor
« on: November 13, 2019, 13:40:42 »
Just noticed (as it's not something that happens regularly!) that the individual's name at the top of Aries editor isn't automatically updated when the name is changed. Even after saving, I have to navigate away then return to see it updated.

Latest daily version 10.0.10023 on Linux.

I'm not sure what the window is called because they're not named. The one with the tablular view of all records. If you want to select multiple - usually you can click one, then click another and it'll highlight all in between. When you do that in your app and then try and right-click, it deslects them all.

I'm sure this is a 'safety feature', I doubt there are many contexts in which you'd want to change details in this way for multiple individuals. There's always 'Replace' or right-click and edit for something like a place or source that might affect many individuals.

  • UserID pane : Button to generate a tree based on this user would be nice.
Do you mean a tree based on the selected individual? If so you can double click an individual and the 'Dynamic Tree' will show you what you need.

With regard to search you could use a space such as 'Doe John' (or John Doe!) rather than 'Doe, John' or 'Doe,John'. Ctrl+A works for me to select all in the search toolbox (and in Find).

As you've discovered, genealogy programs tend to be complicated and idiosyncratic. I've used many over the years (PAF, Gramps, Rootsmagic, Family Historian, Legacy, Ahnenblatt, Familienbande, Genj, Ancestris and others) and they all have their quirks. It's just a case of finding the one you're most comfortable with then maybe helping to refine it and you seem to have made a good start with that :D
