ENGLISH / Usability suggestions: Aries Editor
« on: October 07, 2019, 10:08:27 »
Just a couple of ideas which might improve things. I appreciate that some of these will depend on how you use Ancestris for example on a small screen laptop, a widescreen monitor, with floating windows or tabs, which appearance you use etc etc.

  • The word 'Edit' at top left of the tab is not needed (it's quite confusing if you have someone named Edith too!). I think it would be better if the name was in a slightly larger font with more space above and below.
  • When clicking on an OCCU event in the list, the occupation field which appears to the right is too close to the top of the tab (seem to be the same whichever 'Appearance' option is selected)
  • It would be helpful to include marriage(s) in the individual's event list. I understand that this is a 'shared event' (and it's visible on the spouses and children tab) but it would improve usability IMHO
  • The text that appears in the last column on the 'Spouse(s) & Child(ren)' tab should really read 'Marriage...' rather than 'Wedding...'
  • The 'Spouse(s) & Child(ren)' tab could be renamed to 'Spouses & Children' - if there are none or just one it doesn't matter, it just looks better (IMHO again!)
  • Some individuals with two given names have a comma displayed after their names while others do not. People with one or three given names do not seem to have a comma at the end. (maybe a subtle bug or bad data at import?)
  • The lock icon at top right is jammed against the edge of the frame, the lower lock and associate icons are up against the top of the tab and neither lock icon has a tooltip to explain what it does

Hope that helps?!

ENGLISH / Aries editor navigation issue
« on: October 06, 2019, 20:49:49 »
When using the toolbar buttons to navigate back/forward in Aries editor, if the record being moved to does not have any events, the events details tab continues to show information from the previous record. See attached. Solution - the event tabs need to be refreshed when stepping through records (I think!).

Paul

EDIT: The same thing happens when selecting a record using the drop-down next to the navigator (arrow) buttons.
EDIT2: ... and when double clicking to navigate between any two records in the Entities Table

ENGLISH / Suggestion: font anti-aliasing in Entities Table
« on: October 06, 2019, 19:42:28 »
Is it possible to set anti-aliasing on the font in the entities table data in a future release? In the attached, the UI elements are smoothed, the table data is not. The same applies to the Gedcom Editor. I'm guessing this has been 'hard-coded' somewhere (perhaps to improve rendering speed when the table is large?) as it doesn't seem to be affected by config settings. Text of data in both Aries and Cygnus is anti-aliased.

Cheers,

Paul

ENGLISH / Window -> Save Display Settings
« on: October 06, 2019, 19:31:40 »
For some reason this doesn't quite work as expected. I like to have three tabs open in this order: Entities Table (individuals), Dynamic Tree, Aries Editor. The tabs are 'maximized' ie they all occupy the same (maximum) space. Whenever I restart the program the first and second tabs change place ie the order is Dynamic Tree, Entities Table, Aries Editor

Window->Save Display Settings shows the correct 'last backup' time/date.

This is on Linux Mint 19.1 XFCE 64bit.

ENGLISH / Adresses, RESI tags
« on: October 06, 2019, 16:46:43 »
I have many individuals with multiple addresses but they don't seem to show up anywhere (in either editor). In the raw *.ged they appear as, for example:

Code: [Select]
1 RESI
2 DATE 1900
2 PLAC Oswestry, Shropshire, England
2 ADDR 67 Beatrice Street
2 SOUR @S33@
1 RESI
2 DATE 1901
2 PLAC Oswestry, Shropshire, England
2 ADDR 7 Stewart Road
2 SOUR @S15@
3 PAGE PAGE RG13 / 2545
and that info is visible in the Gedcom editor so it's being imported properly.

Is there no support for showing/editing/adding addresses in the Aries or Cygnus editors or am I missing something?

ENGLISH / Gedcom Problem
« on: October 04, 2019, 14:31:43 »
I have over 1,000 multimedia records which are not Gedcom 5.5.1 compliant in that the TITL and FORM tags are not subordinate to the FILE tag (see attached). These have been created by various programs over the last 20 years. As a result the titles, which essential for some images, do not display in Ancestris.

Even if I wanted to hand edit these (and I don't!), there doesn't seem to be a away to drag and drop the tags into the correct place so it would involve creation of new tags in correct position and copy/pasting information.

Is there any fix for this? If there's no other solution I can probably come up with a script to do the job.

Thanks,

Paul

ENGLISH / View Images in Aries Editor's Gallery
« on: October 04, 2019, 10:33:33 »
Is there some way to view images at their full size (and preferably be able to zoom in/out) from the Aries editor's gallery tab? Even opening an image in the default external editor would be ok but as it stands only a small standard sized image is displayed (and it doesn't resize when maximizing the 'Edit Multimedia' dialog). It's a problem when trying to view large detailed images such as a census page.

TIA

Paul

EDIT I didn't spot the tooltip that says you can right click after opening the edit dialog to view it externally! Couldn't this be a right-click option directly from the gallery list rather than having to choose 'edit' first?

ENGLISH / Report Problems
« on: October 04, 2019, 08:59:46 »
Reports that output text directly, .svg or .ps seem to work ok.

Those that output a .pdf create a zero byte sized file with a '*** Formatting Ancestors of ... failed' error.

I imagine this is related to my system (Linux Mint 19.1 64bit XFCE), any suggestions please?

ENGLISH / Font and GUI element size
« on: October 03, 2019, 15:56:59 »
How do I change the font size and interface elements (on Linux)? In GenJ it was an option if I recall correctly but it seems to have disappeared.

If you look at this image from a widescreen monitor you'll see that tabs and other elements are extremely small - most of the window is occupied by blank space (ok I know the particular tab is maximized but still). Just increasing font size would be a great help! :D

ENGLISH / Import forces 4 levels of place name heirarchy
« on: October 03, 2019, 15:47:49 »
...not a problem in itself except that place names can end up displayed as things like ", Manchester, Lancashire, England" or worse yet ", , ,India" if I know someone was born in that country but have no more detail.

It looks ugly. Isn't it possible to remove leading commas for display purposes?

ENGLISH / Inconsistent commas?
« on: May 31, 2019, 20:35:47 »
In this image there's a comma after the individual's given names, 'Walter John', but in the grid view there isn't. Furthermore, for a person with a single given name, commas don't appear in the person's details or in the grid. It seems a bit inconsistent; I can see why it would be used for Family Name, Given Name but not Given Names, Family Name when they are already in separate edit boxes.

Hope that explanation is clear! :D

ENGLISH / Label not translated in Cygnus editor

(and why are the edit boxes smaller than the dropdown box and buttons? Looks a bit odd!)

ENGLISH / Object (Image) titles not displayed in editor
« on: May 31, 2019, 13:46:11 »
For some reason, titles aren't being displayed in the editor even though they are present in the *.ged. This is the latest 'daily version' on Linux.

It's also almost impossible to resize columns in the grid to view the file path etc - the headers are incredibly unresponsive.

EDIT: I've also noticed that switching to the Aries editor tab when its gallery tab is selected from any other view causes a long delay. Switching between other tabs or to the Aries editor when its 'events' or some other tab is selected, does suffer from the delay. Switching between multimedia objects in the gallery view grid (with a single click) also causes a delay.

The path to the image also looks wrong in this grid - my files are shown as '/home/paul/desktop/../family-history-media/.... but /family-history/media is in my /home folder - I'm guessing that the first part of the displayed path is where the Ancestris folder is located and is being used to build a relative link to the image. The images themselves display correctly.

I have a lot of linked images, I wonder if all this path calculation is the cause of the delays?

Unzipped the archive and tried to execute ancestris/bin/ancestris. From the desktop nothing happens, in a terminal I get the following error message:
