Bonjour Frederic,

« on: May 07, 2023, 10:16:07 »

Thanks for your reply Zurga!
I wish, for myself and others, that clicking on 'the' link would lead to such a (short but understandable) answer - in the Ancestris forums.

Moin!
The Ancestris Welcome page shows me Latest Updates.
5/6/22
Document Reports (as a link)
v11/v12 - Adapt Documents reports to match Java evolution
When I click this (and all previous) links, I end up in the Ancestris forums.
There the 'heading' (topic) is defined as a link to itself without further explanation.
It would make sense for me to learn more!

Addendum:
I forgot to mention that Ancestris is now loading my GEDCOM (older backup from 2022-03-17) very slowly again. The sources and source locations are back.
From 81% it takes forever. I think the data structure of the sources and source locations is pretty jagged!
But I didn't create any of those myself.
Almost all of them were created through multiple GEDCOM imports.
From maybe 30 - 40 different sources (software programs (a-z), for Windows, Linux, Mac, Ancestris, MyHeritage, ...)
Ancestris shows me some messages, which I unfortunately don't (directly) understand (I don't speak the English language - and our German translator seems to be a phantom).
.Empty lines found, 'invalid' tags, unassigned, and so on.
So before I really go any further and then try Ancestris under 'normal' conditions, I have to clean up my GEDCOM first!

Hey Frederic!

Unfortunately not yet - even though I really would like to!
Ancestris is not yet equally suitable for me or for my 'special' way of working or (special) purposes.

Ancestris is a very clean and stably programmed genealogy software with many and very well thought-out functions, but it is too difficult for many beginners (including those who already do genealogy) to get started with it.
The basic functions should be INTUITIVE to use without having to look in a manual!
My genealogy software, which I still use now, was and is designed in this way!

With ZERO idea what genealogy even means, I chose it from about 100 programs that I had previously tested. The reason was Ray Dee Pollmann's announcement that he was coming here to look for his roots.
Because I wanted to help him, I started doing genealogy.

I would love to be able to use the many special functions of Ancestris immediately, some of which have been on my wish list for years. But it still doesn't work for me! Unfortunately!

Regards,
Dieter

Moin Frederic!
Microsoft Edge was the cause of ALL the problems!!!
Around 1000 tabs that were long since closed were 'carried along' in the background!
This affected Windows itself and all programs! Both not only became 'very shaky', but there were also many malfunctions!
My genealogy software's SAVE resulted in erasing 'this' GEDCOM = it was no longer physically present on the drive as if I had erased it!

Greetings,
Dieter

Moin Frederic!

First: my GEDCOM currently contains 338,600 personal data. Right now I see that 462627 sources are shown, source locations 0 (NULL).
ALL sources have the content: 'untitled'

To avoid misunderstandings:
The loss of ALL sources and the misattribution of notes is not related to Ancestris!!!

Because I load my GEDCOM with Ancestris from time to time, I noticed the significantly reduced import time after the changes described above.

Ancestris is still my first choice for upgrading from my current genealogy software and I recommend all my contacts to check it out!

Unfortunately, I keep getting similar feedback as recently:
This looks great, but I can't handle it!
These are almost exclusively people who want to record their family information with suitable software. Some have the information on paper, some archived with Excel.

Greetings,
Pollux

Hey Frederic!
Please forgive me - I have to correct my statement!
Not Ancestris got faster, but my GEDCOM got smaller! - and maybe 'disentangled'?:
The week before last, I told a fellow researcher that my GEDCOM had shrunk.
Now I have discovered that ALL sources (I have NEVER created sources myself) have been lost and it only says there: "untitled".
Also, a lot of notes were assigned to 'other' (wrong) people.
Best regards,
Pollux (Dieter)

Unfortunately I can't use Ancestris as it should be, but still a big compliment:
Reading in my very large GEDCOM file has now become extremely fast!

Thank you Frederic, that's very kind of you!
Unfortunately, this will not be as easy as you might imagine. I am writing to you personally.

Please, I would very much like to meet an Ancestris user with sufficient background knowledge who can answer my questions about Ancestris functions (and beyond) directly and with examples on the computer!
Operating systems would be Windows so far and Haiku in the future.
I live in Ostfriesland (North-West Germany), I'm also in the Duisburg area and have distant relatives in Sémoy, France.

Moin Frederic,
Thank you for your detailed answer!
I backed it up (for now) because I don't (yet!) Work with Ancestris.
It's 'just' my 'problem', but it happens more often!
The data include (mostly) the entire genealogy of a descendant of emigrants, which was (often carelessly) clicked together on the Internet.
This is one of the reasons why this data is (partly) very incorrect.
I am currently again merging such data with mine, correcting and completing it.
The imported data have the 'attribute' source = name / description. So they are already marked ...

Regards,
Dieter

ENGLISH / Third-party GEDCOM import + correction + export
« on: November 28, 2021, 06:14:59 »
A current problem that I've had several times!
I am receiving a GEDCOM from the US or another country.
When I look at the content, I almost always notice (many!) Serious errors that I want to correct 'comprehensively'.
However, this is only possible to some extent pleasantly if I import the GEDCOM to my data and then merge the duplicates person by person.
* +++

My problem afterwards is that I cannot only export and send back all (received and corrected) data as GEDCOM on CLICK.

Maybe it's just my 'problem'?
It would have to be described in more detail, however. *
