Thank you for this update.

May be this post was overlooked. I'd still like to know the opinion about my proposal from the developers of Ancestris.

Many thanks,

Matjaz

Thank you for pointing out this possibility. No need for eliminating commas. The report looks good to me now.

Hi,

Currently, there is always a comma at the end of the 'Occupation' event, even when only one event is listed. E.g.

Occupation lawyer, Occupation politician, Birth ...

     = lawyer,  = politician, °.

Aren't commas kind of redundant, even when it comes to enumeration, as this is already evident from the repeated event name or its symbol? It seems to me that the report would have gained in appearance if there were no commas.

Or, are the commas there because the events might be followed by places, etc.?

Hi,

Auto-generated text in the 'Education' needs to be corrected: He reach the education-level [level] --> He reached the education level [level]

ENGLISH / Family report: proposal to display more than one occupation
« on: October 16, 2024, 14:46:00 »
Hi,

Currently only one occupation is displayed in the 'Family descent lineage' report which leaves out other important occupations of the person (e.g. a person that is architect and painter). I suggest to add the option 'Maximum number of occupations displayed' under the option 'Occupations', either unlimited number or as a choice 1 to 3. The same option exists below the option 'Display occupations' in the 'Graphic ascending and descending multi-generations tree'.

The same could also apply to the option 'Residence', but this might be not needed that much.

Thank you for adding this option in the 'Family descent lineage' report.

I can't test this yet, as I'm currently still on version 12. When I started using Ancestris, I had a problem with the default font (I think Sans Serif) not able to display all characters in my language. I got then Ancestris' recommendation to use Alef instead. Given these restrictions with the font, I'm not sure if it will be always possible to choose a font that will display characters in specific language and symbols for gender at the same time. (I just checked: Alef currently displays gender in 'Family tree' so I suppose I will be fine.)

May be adding gender indication in the children's list in the 'Narrative report' is not so indespensable, but it would certainly add useful information to the names in the list. Although a gender is visible in the entry for the child, one can see this information only in the other place in the report. Until then, one have to wonder in some cases (this varies with languages) about the gender of the child.

Thank you for your reply.

I can see that ascendant and descendant reports are two separate things. To me descendants report is by far more complete because it shows all lines of descent as opposed to the "Ascendancy report" which only shows the direct line of ancestry. For this reason, I find descendants report generally more useful (for example to share with relatives belonging to many different families).

Therefore I still see no reason why not to give the whole possible information about the spouse also in the descendants report. The question is how?

My proposed solution was only an attempt how to incorporate the information about the spouse in the report. In it the information about the spouse was indented. I believe a better solution can be found in accordance with the philosophy behind this report. I hope my reasons are valid enough to justify finding a suitable solution.

I'm sending you a slight variation of my first proposal (just as an idea).

Hi,

I believe that the 'Narrative report' should also provide detailed information about spouses. Or to put it another way: even spouses deserve more detailed entries. One, two or more generations later these persons will be grandfathers/grandmothers, great-grandfathers/great-grandmothers and so on, and therefore they are equally interesting for genealogy than other ancestors. In the 'Family descent lineage' report, which is more succint, they are correctly given equal weight.

My suggestions for including more detailed information about spouses are given in the form of an example report for BOUVIER, Jacqueline Lee, the wife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (the Ancestris report omits the fact that she was married to the US president). Please compare the report created by Ancestris with the redesigned report with my suggestions that are marked in blue. Both reports are in the attachments.

Hi,

I didn't mean to change the ordering. But since, according to your explanation, the ordering is not different from d'Aboville numbering, there is really no need to change anything here. Knowing that, it is indeed possible to quickly match the child in the children's list with the entry for him/her and vice versa on the basis of d'Aboville numbering.

Thanks for your explanation,

Matjaž

Hi,

A person's gender is not always clear from the person's name or other description. So, for example, there are names in various languages that can be both male and female (e.g. Alexis in English), similarly the English words 'born', 'died' etc. in the description are not gender specific (while they are in French). Would it be possible to indicate the person's gender in 'Family descent lineage' and 'Narrative lineage of ascendants or descendants' reports? May be by the addition of (M), (F) or (U) after the person's name in children's list ('Narrative' report) and by the addition of (M), (F), (U) or symbol for gender in 'Family' report.

Hi,

My suggestion is to replace the existing numbering in children's list with Sosa/d'Aboville/Sosa-d'Aboville numbering (does it make sense?) when the option  'Include existing numbering in report' is ticked in 'Options'. This may facilitate referring back and forth between the child in the list and the corresponding entry for him/her under the heading for generation as both will have the same number.

ENGLISH / Different formats of d'Aboville numbering
« on: October 13, 2024, 22:29:08 »
Hi,

The format of d'Aboville numbering in 'Family descent lineage' report differs from the format that appears in Gedcom/Cygnus/Aries editor and also in 'Narrative lineage of ascendants or descendants' report (e.g. 3-175 vs. 3.1.7.5). Shouldn't it always be the same?

ENGLISH / Deleting content in shared 'Source Text' is not working
« on: October 12, 2024, 13:17:30 »
Hi,

Deleting content in shared 'Source Text' tab in source editor in Aries is not working properly. After confirming the change, the content that was presumably deleted is still there. Replacing the content with some other content, on the other hand, is working OK. The content in this tab can be normally deleted in Cygnus editor.

Matjaž
