ENGLISH / Proposal to add "Type" property in Aries editor
« on: April 06, 2026, 11:58:11 »
The Type property only exists in the Cygnus editor, but not in the Aries editor, although it would be useful. Wouldn't it make sense to have this option in Aries as well? After all, Aries is supposed to be more complete than Cygnus.

It wasn't until I read one of the previous posts on the topic of "type" that I realized that I could have used the type property before, at least in connection with occupations. But since I mostly use Aries, I didn't even think about it, even though I could have done it in the Gedcom editor.

During all this time, I have accumulated a long list of occupations that I would now like to categorize. I see no other option than to do it one by one. I imagine that it would be easier to do this if there was a similar list for types/occupations as there is for places (List/Table of palce), with the option to edit, replace, etc. Such a possibility would also be interesting to have in the long term, since there is always a need to change the names of occupations and re-categorize them.

ENGLISH / Canceling input for Source not working as expected
« on: March 29, 2026, 18:21:30 »
I'm noticing the following behavior in the Aries editor:

When creating a source (i.e. Add source followed by Edit source) for an Individual or a Family, it is not always possible to cancel the input as one would expect. By clicking Cancel, the result is often the same as if one clicked OK. I'm noticing a similar behavior also when adding a new multimedia object in Gallery. Please, see my workflow in the attachment for more details. THIS BEHAVIOR DOESN'T HAPPEN EVERY TIME, BUT I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT WHY AND IN EXACTLY WHAT CIRCONSTANCES!

I've learned to be careful to immediately delete such unwanted entry in the next step. In the Entities table, the entry for the entity can be either kept and processed for another source/multimedia object or deleted. However, it may happen that the source or multimedia object will be used with the wrong Idividual or Family or several of them if the whole thing is overlooked. Unfortunately, it still happens to me quite often.

I haven't checked this behavior in other editors.

Best regards,

Matjaž

PS: I'm not able to send the attachment because I get the warning that the file is too large. I can send it latter by an e-mail if you wish so.

ENGLISH / Double entries in the window for Source citation
« on: March 26, 2026, 18:41:29 »
Why some entries on the drop down lists under 'Event type' and 'Role in event' are doubled in Aries editor in the form of Gedcom tags? As I recall, initially there were no Gedcom tags on the list. See examples in the attachment.

I use Ancestris 13.

ENGLISH / Some entries are doubled in sub-menus in Menu bar
« on: March 26, 2026, 18:11:47 »
There are two entries for 'Aries editor' in View and 'Merge duplicates' in Tools. See examples in the attachment.

I use Ancestris 13.

The prefix, surname prefix, and/or suffix from the first entry on the Other names tab (Aries editor) or the first sequential name tag (Gedcom editor) also display in the person's name in the individual display in the Dynamic tree, while the name on the Name tab has no prefixes or suffixes. This only occurs in the Default view and partially also in the Detailed view, and needs to be fixed.

For sources that are not part of a repository, the repository name from the previously viewed source that is part of the repository is displayed in the Repositary Tab. This happens when editing a source selected from the entity table for sources. Trying to delete the repository has no effect (Delete repository null message). The repository is not saved when confirmig other changes in the source record, which is OK. Still it is annoying.

I use Ancestris 13.

ENGLISH / Issues with setting Dates in Preferences
« on: February 19, 2026, 13:58:17 »
Hi,

I noticed the following issues/inconsistencies when trying to set the dates in Preferences > Data > General data (see the picture of my screen in the attachment):

1) In the drop-down list under Dates, I noticed that incorrect examples are listed for Numeric and Point. They should be corrected to Numeric (e.g. 25/01/1970) and Point (e.g. 25.01.1970) respectively.

2) The explanation in the bubble next to Dates only lists four possible choices, while there are actually five choices to select from.

3) When selecting Point the date was correctly set as dd.mm.yyyy. But only the first time I chose it. When I tried a few other options and selected Point again, the date was set with dots and spaces between day, month and year, and without leading zeros, e.g. 25. 1. 1970. (In fact, I wouldn't have anything against such an additional option for setting the date, as it would be in line with how dates are spelled in my language and probably some other European language as well; see also my post Date format proposal, Oct. 2, 2024.)

4) When after selecting Point and playing around with other options for dates, I never managed to get the date set correctly when selecting Numeric. The date was always set without dashes and in the same format as in Point.

I am using Ancestris 13. My settings are: Interface Language: System settings / Reports Language: GUI language.

Hi,

Currently, there is always a comma at the end of the 'Occupation' event, even when only one event is listed. E.g.

Occupation lawyer, Occupation politician, Birth ...

     = lawyer,  = politician, °.

Aren't commas kind of redundant, even when it comes to enumeration, as this is already evident from the repeated event name or its symbol? It seems to me that the report would have gained in appearance if there were no commas.

Or, are the commas there because the events might be followed by places, etc.?

ENGLISH / Family report: proposal to display more than one occupation
« on: October 16, 2024, 14:46:00 »
Hi,

Currently only one occupation is displayed in the 'Family descent lineage' report which leaves out other important occupations of the person (e.g. a person that is architect and painter). I suggest to add the option 'Maximum number of occupations displayed' under the option 'Occupations', either unlimited number or as a choice 1 to 3. The same option exists below the option 'Display occupations' in the 'Graphic ascending and descending multi-generations tree'.

The same could also apply to the option 'Residence', but this might be not needed that much.

Hi,

I believe that the 'Narrative report' should also provide detailed information about spouses. Or to put it another way: even spouses deserve more detailed entries. One, two or more generations later these persons will be grandfathers/grandmothers, great-grandfathers/great-grandmothers and so on, and therefore they are equally interesting for genealogy than other ancestors. In the 'Family descent lineage' report, which is more succint, they are correctly given equal weight.

My suggestions for including more detailed information about spouses are given in the form of an example report for BOUVIER, Jacqueline Lee, the wife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (the Ancestris report omits the fact that she was married to the US president). Please compare the report created by Ancestris with the redesigned report with my suggestions that are marked in blue. Both reports are in the attachments.

Matjaž

Hi,

A person's gender is not always clear from the person's name or other description. So, for example, there are names in various languages that can be both male and female (e.g. Alexis in English), similarly the English words 'born', 'died' etc. in the description are not gender specific (while they are in French). Would it be possible to indicate the person's gender in 'Family descent lineage' and 'Narrative lineage of ascendants or descendants' reports? May be by the addition of (M), (F) or (U) after the person's name in children's list ('Narrative' report) and by the addition of (M), (F), (U) or symbol for gender in 'Family' report.

Matjaž

Hi,

My suggestion is to replace the existing numbering in children's list with Sosa/d'Aboville/Sosa-d'Aboville numbering (does it make sense?) when the option  'Include existing numbering in report' is ticked in 'Options'. This may facilitate referring back and forth between the child in the list and the corresponding entry for him/her under the heading for generation as both will have the same number.

ENGLISH / Different formats of d'Aboville numbering
« on: October 13, 2024, 22:29:08 »
Hi,

The format of d'Aboville numbering in 'Family descent lineage' report differs from the format that appears in Gedcom/Cygnus/Aries editor and also in 'Narrative lineage of ascendants or descendants' report (e.g. 3-175 vs. 3.1.7.5). Shouldn't it always be the same?

ENGLISH / Deleting content in shared 'Source Text' is not working
« on: October 12, 2024, 13:17:30 »
Hi,

Deleting content in shared 'Source Text' tab in source editor in Aries is not working properly. After confirming the change, the content that was presumably deleted is still there. Replacing the content with some other content, on the other hand, is working OK. The content in this tab can be normally deleted in Cygnus editor.

Matjaž
