Title: Ancestris on a tablet?
Post by: Pollux on May 03, 2021, 10:23:58

I installed my (older) genealogy software, which I still use up to now, under Windows 10 on a tablet with 2GB RAM.
The software works with the data of 333,614 people at a very comfortable pace.
An external Rii i4 Mini Bluetooth 4.0 and 2.4GHz keyboard with touchpad works great with Haiku (32bit + 64bit) on the Mini PC Zotac ZBOX IQ 01.
Tested in 2.4 GHz mode, very high quality workmanship, pleasant keyboard, touchpad works perfectly without having to make any settings.
Otherwise I don't like touchpads!

Haiku has already been installed on tablets without being prepared for it.
In the future, I would like to use Ancestris with Haiku (OS) not only on the Zotac ZBOX IQ 01 mini PC and the DELL XPS15 L502x notebook, but also on an (inexpensive) tablet with 4 GB of RAM.
When I fly to the Philippines or the USA, I don't want to carry a notebook with me, just a 'genealogy tablet'!

But is that even possible with Ancestris? (OpenJDK 8 or 11) with 333,614 personal data on 4GB RAM (built-in memory) in a tablet?
Maybe with a minimum of installed extensions / plug-ins?

You will probably able to run Ancestris on a tablet with 4Gb RAM
Most of plugin could be installed.
Perhaps don't use Graph extension which is resources greedy.
I'm not sure with the cartography display.
Avoid the prints methods.

Thank you very much, Zurga!

As soon as I have found a suitable tablet for Haiku, I will install Ancestris on it and test it.
Which presets should I take to e.g. reserve RAM for OpenJDK and ? / or ? Ancestris?
I still have to ask the Haiku people how much RAM the next stable Haiku (without unnecessary debug code, without nightly updates) will take up.

I suggest you to set 2Gb to Ancestris as minimum (you have lot of people in your genealogy).

As soon as I have installed Haiku on my current tablet, or a new compatible one, I will report.
Please tell me where hard-coded translations (output in Win10 in German, output in Hauku64bit in English) are stored!
Perhaps it will help the haiku people (especially Korli) find the bug.

There is no hard-coded labels.
All the labels are stored in translation bundles.

Then I misunderstood the following:

Zitat
Did you try to download the last version again from the site to test on Haiku ?
The first explanation I see is that this specific sentence is embedded into the core application module and this is not updated as other modules.

Ancestris uses Netbeans.
Some labels come from Ancestris, some come from Netbeans.
The Ancestris one are all in Bundles.
The Netbeans ones are normally also in bundles.

The bundle could be translated or not (depending of the translator) but there is no reason that a translation works on one OS and not on another one.

For the translation embedded in core application, this means that some labels used directly by the launcher application can't be updated by standard update mechanism and you need to reinstall the package.

Please forgive me, I have apparently lost sight of that (https://forum.ancestris.org/index.php?topic=3222.0) and haven't posted it on https://discuss.haiku-os.org/ yet.
When you asked me to do so, I re-installed Ancestris 11 under Haiku.
It stayed as it was before: Under Haiku text output in English, although the German language is set.

What should I ask or tell the haiku people?

I have checked the labels you mentioned in the other thread.
Theses labels are not translated.
You should see English labels for theses specific one on any of your OS.

If you see a German label on an OS and English on another one, this mean that this OS has weird behavior.

Do I understand you correctly that these text outputs (program messages) from Ancestris are the same on EVERY OS and MUST be output in English?

I have just set Ancestris 11 'under Windows 10'* once to German and once to English
You can see the result in the appendix.
I'll repeat that later under haiku.

*EDIT: under Haiku 64bit > under Windows 10

Please forgive the mess!

Under Haiku 64bit, the text is still output in English.

I know this topic belongs to "Translation incomplete" https://forum.ancestris.org/index.php?topic=3222.0
Unfortunately it turned out that way.

Only now did I notice that under German-German (program language-output language) pre-setting, parts in German and parts in English are output.
Among other things, at the bottom right (side by side).

Please, Zurga, what should I say to the haiku people?
Can it be due to the OpenJDK port, or other 'dependencies'?

I don't know where is the German translation you see on Windows.
As far As I see in the code, the line is not translated.
I join the English and German bundle currently in the v11 code.

Thank you, even if it doesn't help in the end.
Strange when a text is output in German, although it is not translated at all.
He's got to come from somewhere, right?

Yes, it should come from somewhere, but I have no clue about the place where this label is.
