Title: Ancestris and privacy?
Post by: Michl on January 06, 2021, 07:25:25
Hello!

I'm a genealogist from Germany and always interested in good software.

Today I discovered Ancestris. The program looks very interesting and I would like to try it. Unfortunatelly there is no German version. That may be a reason, why the program seems to be quite unknown in Germany. At least I have the impression, that it is.

However, there is one thing that is stopping me from installing it. I can't find any information anywhere on how the program handles my privacy. Can Ancestrys view the data I open, edit or save in the program? Or will the data only stay on my private hard drive? Where can I find information about the privacy of the program? And is the software code publicly available?

Would be great to hear from you.

Yours,

Michl

Thank you for trying Ancestris.

Ancestris is a desktop software with no transfer to online server.
All your data stay in your hard-drive.
You decide what you do with your data.
Ancestris is not an online site with publication of data.
There is no data transfer to any Ancestris server.

For the German version, we had a translator but he hasn't done any translation for several years.
If you want to finish the translation the software, you are welcome.

The code is open and you can find information about it here : https://docs.ancestris.org/books/contribution/page/coding
If you want to contribute, you are welcome too.

Hello Zurga!

Thank you very much, for your quick answer. I will have a look at the program and try it.

Unfortunatelly my english is not the best and also I am very busy at the moment - so I have no time and no possibility to do a translation. But you could try to find somebody in Germany by posting a request in the very frequented german forum forum.ahnenforschung.net . I think, that would make the program more famous in Germany too.

If you find someone motivated by the translation it will be a great addition to the software.
The primary language of the development team is French and the development team do the English translation, so we need anyone to translate from French or English to German.

I think, it would be better, if you (or somebody else) could make a post in the German forum. I know nearly nothing about ancestris. If there will come any questions about it, I can´t give any answers.
Here is a list to genealogy-software, that is referred to quite often in the forum.

As you can see - "ancestris" is not listed. Even if you search for "ancestris" in the forum, you will find almost no posts.
I think it would make sense if someone who really knows the program, could briefly introduce it and at the same time ask for a translator.

I'm afraid that my German language ability is not enough to make a decent post....
If I could post in English, it could be done, but in German....
Google translate far better than me.

We have a German user Pollux who could perhaps do this post.
I will try to contact him.

Yes - maybe Pollux can help, but I think, you could do it also in english. Most Germans speak English at least a little bit. Its part of the standard school education of everybody. So it should be no problem.
If there are nevertheless any translation problems, I also could help.

Thank you very much!

One of my (many) brothers-in-law studied French and history. He loves the French language and needed it in his job at SOLVAY Rheinberg.
He is retired, but I don't know if I can encourage him to do the translation.
Many PC users shy away when they read or hear JAVA.
Perhaps this behaviour is more pronounced among Germans than elsewhere.

Thank you for this information.
If anyone could change this page : http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Ancestris
At least to indicate that the last version is 10 (8th February 2020) instead of version 0.8

I have updated this page http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Ancestris (http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Ancestris) and added a link to Ancestris on the English software page http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/Software (http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/Software)
