Title: People Search in Ancestris ...
Post by: Pollux on November 19, 2020, 12:51:51
How can I only find people with the following family names:

Fre, Free, Frei, Frey, Vre, Vree, Vrei, Vrey, Vry, Vrye, output  and sorted by first name without the mentioned family names influencing the sorting order?

EDIT:
The aforementioned family names are different spellings of ONE family name! No different families!
It has happened that a person has several of these family names in different sources or documents.
The behavior of the first names (each belonging to it) was similar, which increased the number of differences for ONE person again!
In addition, family names were not mentioned in many church registers and other sources for several generations. In these cases, the patronymy 'served' as a family name!

Searching for (possible) duplicates takes on a whole new dimension!

You want to search for those family names in one shot, all at once. Interesting. It would be great to be able to write those partial names separated by comas, and have the result sort in alphabetic order in the table view. I'm interested about that request too. you have good ideas Pollux ;-) Francois

You have a "geek" way to do it with a regular expression in the advance search (by property) :
Put Fre|Free|Frei|Frey|Vre|Vree|Vrei|Vrey|Vry|Vrye
Choose NAME in the GEDCOM tag criteria

I don't know any way to do it with a comma separated list.

The advanced search with regular expressions is not an easy way for "normal" users. An easier way would be to be able to do it in the search window of the table view. However, if this is not feasible, too bad. Francois

I still have many ideas about functions and their implementation that I haven't found in any genealogy software so far.
Not because I want it, but because I miss it very much and have needed it many times!

Edit:
I don’t like drop-down menus where they can be avoided - and very often they are!
They often lead to click orgies, coupled with confusion!

By the way (a programmer told me this many years ago):
"Who says that doesn't work!", He doesn't want to or can't!

So do I ;-)

Yes, but it's easier to ask for a function than to write code for it. So I can easily understand that people who develop a software want to concentrate on bugs and on functions most useful for as many people as possible. But it's true that sometimes a request for an add-on can give lots of possibilities for users, and it's difficult to convince developers on it. Francois

OK, it seems I should have completed my sentence :
I don't know any way to do it with a comma separated list in Ancestris actually

Sorry for this lack of exactness.

Search for more people / families ... in Ancestris Quick mode (future):

Married couples:
> Pollmann oo Pollmann = exact spelling
> Po*lman. oo Po*lman. = with joker (Poehlman, Poehlmann, Poelman, Poelmann, Pohlman, Pohlmann, Polman, Polmann, Pollman, Pollmann,

Find family (s) of siblings (possibly including half and step siblings) if at least two are known, but not their parents:
> Gesa, Dirk, Antje (including the use of jokers)

No question? No comment?

Did you read EDIT: in the first post?

I do not know if you address your post to me or Zurga. If you want to speak about it with me, it could be more appropriate on the IRC chanel. No need for a specific software, just click on the link below.

I give you a way to do it in the current version of Ancestris.

Put Fre|Free|Frei|Frey|Vre|Vree|Vrei|Vrey|Vry|Vrye
Choose NAME in the GEDCOM tag criteria

I said we put the idea on the to do list.
What do you want more ?

Personally, I keep only one spelling in the NAME.
I put the variant spelling with others tag NAME
Then, when I search  for the base spelling, I get all the people.

So I can assign the spelling of a person's family name = the spelling given at his death?
And what about other spellings = Input (Example) ; Fre|Free|Frei|Frey|Vre|Vree|Vrei|Vrey|Vry|Vrye ?
That would be a mammoth task for me!

In addition to the ten or (sometimes more) different spellings of a family name, there are just as many spellings of a person's first name - in ALL possible combinations.
The example of a relatively short name (three, maximum four letters) "Fre, Free, Frei, Frey, Vre, Vree, Vree, Vrei, Vrey, Vry, Vrye" is still relatively simple... and it is ONLY about the family name.
Add to this the different possible spellings of the first names - and the fact that family names, if they existed, were often not mentioned in writing for several generations...

In former times in East Frisia only very few people had a 'real' family name (even that was sometimes not mentioned!), otherwise the patronymic naming was valid:
Dirk Gerdes > Gerd Dirks > Johann Gerdes (Gerds, Geerds, Gerts, Geerts, Gerdts, Geerdts, ...) > Jann (Jan, Jans, Janns, Jannes, Johan, Johann, Johannes, Johansen, Johanssen, Joke, ...) Janssen (Janßen, Jansen, Jannsen, Janshen, Jaszen, Jantzen, ...)

Many duplicates remained (remain) undiscovered, even if you had drunk a whole or even two bottles of wine!

I gave you a way to search : replace comma by "|" and you are able to search people with these names.

I gave you my way to do it.
I don't have a genealogy of hundreds of thousands of people, I have only few thousand I have put myself one by one.
So I have chosen a spelling (the one who have survived in our time) and put the others spelling found for this individual in others tag name.
For example, I have a family named during time POIRET, POIREAU, POROT, POREAU, PORET
I choose POIREAU for the common name because at the beginning of twentieth century, the last person of this family is named POIREAU.
I have one individual named POIRET at is christening, POIREAU at his wedding and  POREAU at his death.
I put in the first NAME tag  POIREAU.
In the second NAME tag, I put POIRET with a tag TYPE with the value "Name at the christening"
In the third NAME tag, I put POREAU with a tag TYPE with the value "Name in the death certificate".
I don't put all the possibles spellings, just the spellings found for this individual.
Then, if I found a POROT, I know this is the POIREAU family and I look for POIREAU in my genealogy.

Now, I can't develop what you want in seconds.
It takes time to define a solution to store all the variants you could want to put in the same search.

Again and again I accidentally discover duplicates (or several entries of a family) that cannot be found by 'simple' comparison (I really like the duplicate search window in Ancestris!).
Without a joker (or something like that) it doesn't work!
Integrated consideration of short source entries (which could also be used for task planning - no, should) would be very, very helpful!

Manual definition of individuals marked for fusion is in the to do list.
With this evolution, you should be able to take two arbitrary individuals and merge them.

Thank you very much for your effort!

There are also cases in which I have assigned ONE pair of parents to several people (= 'children') - 2, 3, rarely 4), because I assume that they are identical, i.e. siblings).
Sometimes they're "just" cousins.
I am very often right, even though colleagues sometimes assume that I am bold.
So when I'm sure I want to right click in the appropriate Person box on the diagram and be able to select "Mark to Merge (1st + 2nd Person)". After that comes the Ancestris dialog for it, which I already like so much!
