New Ancestris user
« on: July 19, 2017, 13:50:29 »
I have been involved in Genealogy for about 40 years and working with genealogy programs and GEDCOM files but mostly on Windows. In recent years I have developed a dislike for windows which has created a problem for me as my genealogy program is only available in Windows. I recently found links to the Ancestris and the availability for it to run on ubuntu-Linix. I am giving the program a try and although it seems to be fairly new it is a well developed program and meets my needs on Linux to keep track of my genealogy data. Thanks for a great program. I have 6500 individuals in my GEDCOM.

Hi
Welcome, Donald.
I, too, am new to Ancestris and very much enjoying the learning curve.
I also wanted to introduce myself, and, thank Francios for his wonderful efforts in helping me.

Moin from East Frisia!
I am similar to Donald. I use Windows only because certain software that I use is only available for that.
After OS / 2 (IBM) ZETA gave a short interlude. Now I could install Haiku OS (Nigthly Version) on several computers.
In search of a suitable genealogy sotware I ended up with Michel Clasquin-Johnson (http://clasquin-johnson.co.za/michel/haiku/the-hpkg-gallery/1---a/index.html) and ancestris.
Unfortunately, Ancestris (ancestris_j-0.9.0-1-x86_gcc2.hpkg) can not be installed because openjdk_x86 is missing. In this forum, the search for haiku has brought no result. Maybe a haiku user can help me solve my problem.
There does not seem to be a haiku user testing Ancestris!
I would like to test Ancestris, but neither under Windows nor under Linux I will try!
Greetings, Opa Dieter

Hi,
If OpenJDK is missing, you have to install it first.
A search with Google gave me that :
Haiku Port Project
The Haiku port project is sponsored by the OpenJDK Porters Group, with the bulk of contributors belonging also to the Haiku Java Team.
This project will deliver a complete OpenJDK port to the Haiku operating system.

Once java installed, you will be able to install Ancestris and run it. Francois

Moin Francois!
Thanks for your lines.
Of course, I have discovered that all along ...

Either I have tomatoes on my eyes, or some links end in Nirvana ...
Yesterday I wrote a help e-mail to one of the haiku gurus.
Maybe I'll get an answer after Easter.
If I get help, I will report it.

Great. It will be useful to other people.
This "special" archive of Ancestris for Haiku has been made by an ancestris user : Dominique Baron, so I suppose he was running Haiku too.
Maybe it would have been better to open another thread for this subject, as it is special to a certain operating system.

Viele Grüße
Francois

Moin Francois,

You are absolutely right:
As soon as something about OpenJDK + Ancestris does for Haiku OS, I open a new thread.

Joyeuses Pâques et cordiales salutations,
Dieter
