ENGLISH / Re: It is getting impossible to use Ancestris
« on: April 18, 2019, 13:11:29 »
I downloaded the daily build and installed it and it appears on the start menu. However, when I try and run it the initialisation screen appears but the disappears without the program starting.

I have checked and Java 10 is what is installed on my brand new Linux Mint setup. I tried to follow instructions online as to how to install Java 8 but just get error messages after typing in all the commands:
http://tipsonubuntu.com/2016/07/31/install-oracle-java-8-9-ubuntu-16-04-linux-mint-18/

I also tried the instructions on this page and got the same problem:

I see your problem. For me the difficulty is that I am not a geek and I have no clue how to have two different versions of Java running on my computer at once. As soon as you introduce complications like this the average user just doesn't use your program. For every one person like me who will ask more and try and make it work there will be twenty who don't bother and use some other program.

Why do you not use the most up to date Java? Everything I have read says it is a big mistake not to have the most up to date version of a program, especially Java.

Obviously, Ancestris is not online. However, all my other programs which are online will be using whatever Java I have installed.

Hello:

I have been using Ancestris for about a year on a Linux system and am generally happy. However, I recently upgraded to the newest version of Linux Mint and consequently need to reinstall Ancestris. For various reasons this now seems almost impossible.

Firstly, according to the installation page I must not have the most recent version of Java running but the out of date 1.8. This is a serious security risk:
https://www.ophtek.com/important-update-java/

I am also wondering why a full release of 10.0 has never been made and why it is only available in the "Daily Build". I want to use the features of this version but I also want Ancestris to be properly installed with an icon on the start menu,

Thanks,

M!

I really don't understand this conversation. Has something been changes in Ancestris? Will I be able to choose to display baptismal date instead of birth date in future?

No because I want to do more than a report. I want to start adding in brothers and sisters of people on the tree and make it more than just a the lines going directly back ...

« on: October 24, 2018, 14:53:26 »
I have a tree that begins with me and includes all my ancestors going back. I would like to cut and copy the section that includes my grandmother so I can send it to people who are related to me through her. How do I do this? I can't see any sort of cut or copy options and don't want to retype everything ...

Okay but it appears in the display and looks rather ugly. I am guessing when I go to print they will appear too making a mess of the final product.

I added parents for a person in a pedigree. Then I realised that I had made a mistake and the record I found could not be for this person. So I 'deleted' the two parents. The problem is only the names disappeared and boxes remain empty on my family tree. What do I need to do to get rid of them?

Thanks. It is strange. I am sure I updated to 10 but now I open Ancestris it is still 9.

I am trying to output a family tree as a fan chart. I choose this option and when I press save the only format available is 'html'. That can't be right. Anyway, I save. What I find saved is actually in png format! And in any case it doesn't open and gives an error message ...

Can anyone explain what is happening and how to export a fan chart report?

I am just using Ancestris "off the shelf". I know nothing about programming and am too old to start. I am suggesting something that the developers shoudl consider incorporating in the basic build next time it is updated. It is an issue that concerns so many people.

Hello:

At the end of the summer I sent out the first family tree I made with Ancestris to family members. They were all very interested to see it but every single person asked: "why are there no dates on the earliest generations? Do you know nothing about them?". And I had to explain I had their baptisms and sometimes their burials but that the computer program I am using can only show births and deaths.

It seems most of the developers of Ancestris are French and maybe you have civil records back to 1789 but in Ireland and England the civil records start in the mid-nineteenth century and parish registers are the most important source. The situation I describe is one I think ANY user from an English language speaking country will be in. So if you can change you code a little - if no birth then substitute baptism etc - this will make Ancestris much more functional.

Thank you,

M!

ENGLISH / Heading on a Family Tree
« on: September 08, 2018, 10:30:03 »
Hello:

I have a simple family tree done and ready to be sent to family members. I have got it in PDF format and did so by choosing "All in One Format". I choose not to have subject identity numbers as this is part of the Ancestris database and of no interest to the people I will send it to. But when I output the family tree a big heading appears saying "John Austin (00001)" (see PDF in link). This does not look very nice. So I want to know how to change the heading. I have looked everywhere in the options and can find none concerning heading. Ideally I would like it to say 'Descendants of John Austin and Mary Hogan" but if this cannot be done then for nothing to appear would be best. I can just cut off the heading but then there is no margin and that doesn't look good either.

Thanks,

M!

Using that method you can't but using the All-in-one-chart report as I said some days ago, it's ok.

Everything is okay except this. I really don't like all in one. It mixes the generations around and looks like a flow chart. Is there nothing that keeps everyone of the same generation at the same level? Space is no problem (I will print on A1 or A2 sheets).
