ENGLISH / Tree appears sideways
« on: February 03, 2020, 15:07:59 »
For the first time in two years using Ancestris my family tree now appears sideways. I don't know what button I pressed and nothing I do will make it appear in the traditional top down format.

Ancestris was definitely listed in the repository when I first added it a couple of years ago. It is a shame it is not there any longer. It is a very easy way to find programs.

I will see how far I get with the instructions ...

I downloaded that and there are just a load of files sitting there. I can see bin and exe ... I am looking for Linux ...

You really need to get Ancestris into the Linux repository. If you don't anyone but experts will just give up. Most people will move on to another program rather than ask on here what to do ... When it is in the repository you just click and it is installed. It used to be there and I don't know why it is gone ...

I go to the download page and try and select Linux but nothing responds, not even the 'here' ...

I try using the Package Manager and this says that the latest version is 0.9 not 10.0. It doesn't seem to have been updated officially with Linux.

Okay. I will update. Is there anything I must do in order to get the baptismal date to display when there is no birth date or is it by default?

I have the 0.9 version installed but the tree as I see it while I am working on it does not show the baptism dates. They are viewable only when editing a person, along with all the other data. How do I get them to show?

It seems I was only clicking on "select root of tree" and not also "rebuild tree". There are two different buttons to press and I only did the first.  think this is maybe an addition as I did not notice it before ...

Thanks. I haven't done a tree in a few months. Has something changed? I am used to building trees of three or four generations where everyone is visible at once.

I now have five people in the tree and no matter who I choose as the root I can only ever seen three at most.

I have just started a new tree, add the parents of the first individual and then from them started adding other children. As you can see from the box on the right these children have seen recorded but somehow they do not appear on the tree on the left! What is going on?

Just a very small quibble but whenever you start a new genealogy you get a prompt for the first person and it always says "this is probably you".

No, I have to say that out of a dozen trees I have made this is the case in only two. I am sure this is the case with other people. One's does trees of different individuals one is related to or even of families that are historical and not connected to me personally. Only a few of my trees are centred on me.

Might be worth changing but it is a tiny quibble ...

I tried GRAMPS and I am starting all over again to learn the basics.

You really need to get Ancestris to a situation where it is there in the standard software repertory of Linux (like Gramps is) and anyone can install it at the click of a button. As it is it is only for geeks who can do all these tweaks.

Is there no way to do this using the Software Manager or Package Manager? There should be some simple way to replace Java 10 for Java 8. I have given up caring about the security implications at this stage. I just want to do that and get Ancestris working again. I have thousands of hours of work stuck in it and want to try a print a family tree for someone ...

Obviously, that is why I am trying to install Java 10 (which is what comes as standard now with Linux Mint) and downgrade to Java 8. I presume if I do that it will work. Can you explain how to do that?

Asking me to " modify the ancestris.conf to point the variable "jdkhome" is like telling me to give a speech in French ...
